Graf Shintaku grows tomatoes in Hauula using hydroponic technology and equipment that dates back to the '50s. Each morning, nutrient-rich water flushes the tomato beds, then the water is recycled and the nutrients replenished. Even the cinder in the beds is the original material, brought in from Makiki when the farm was first built.
Graf Shintaku has been growing tomatoes in Hauula since 1955. He was in his mid-20s when he purchased the 2.5-acre hydroponic farm and in that time he has weathered many a mild success and many a near disaster.
Now operated and run by Graf's son, Terry Shintaku continues the legacy of Green Growers.
