The operation is the only large-scale commercial auction in the United States where seafood buyers can touch, smell and taste the raw flesh of each individual fish that they buy. The bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus, is an important food fish and highly sought after recreational game fish. It is a true tuna of the genus Thunnus, belonging to the wider mackerel family Scombridae.
